"All for the Price of One Thin Dime" by Adrian Bourne, copyright © 1998 (unpublished) — was inspired by the Harlan Ellison short story, “Bleeding Stones”, from his short story anthology, “Deathbird Stories”. The story tells of the spontaneous animation of the gargoyles adorning St Patrick’s Cathedral and surrounding buildings in New York, caused by the accumulated peppering of industrial chemicals over the last one hundred years. The living stone statues are now the new inhabitants of fifth avenue and spend the second half of this six page story dispatching the terrified humans below. Ellison introduces this story with, “This is a funny story. Honest to gods…” I was trying to capture that sentiment in this piece. The painting uses black acrylic gesso for the stained-glass leading, Alkyd oil paint for the stained-glass, and comes matted with a black aluminum frame and a glare-free, shatter-proof, acrylic pane.
